What smart street lights bring to smart cities

With the rise of the concept of smart cities, major companies have made arrangements around smart city-related fields. As the infrastructure that can be seen everywhere in the city, the importance of street lights is self-evident. So, what changes will smart lighting bring to street lights in the future? What does it mean for the construction of smart cities?

It is undeniable that smart street lights will become the foundation of the municipal network, providing services in parking control, waste management and traffic flow. The next generation of street lighting will be networked. Cities around the world are already experimenting with smart lighting systems that can be controlled remotely. Not only can the cost of electricity be reduced, but also demand-driven lighting can be realized and carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced. The current design goes even further: Experts regard 'networked lights' as the 'nodes' of the multifunctional communication network of smart cities.

Now, the main purpose of street lights is lighting. However, the street lights will play more functions in the future. For example, when the trash bin is full, street lights will notify the garbage collection service center, or record changes in traffic volume, and enter these data into the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). Street lighting will no longer be an isolated field, but a part of networked urban infrastructure.

This vision is based on the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart city concepts. Every imaginable object and location can be connected to the Internet: cars, containers, street lights and parking lots, even watches, glasses and pens. They can measure various parameters in the environment, and can also digitize daily work. The core of this change is machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, automatic data exchange between networked devices or with the control center.

Smart city solutions are considered to be the key to reducing energy and maintenance costs, complying with climate protection regulations and providing better services to citizens. Smart street lights play a central role in this regard. In fact, in many cities, street lamp problems account for about 20% of citizens' complaints, and intelligent systems can automate the maintenance process. Coupled with LEDs, the programmable lighting management system can reduce the city's electricity costs by 70%.

The combination of nodes and gateways creates a two-layer network. Node narrowband networks are used for sensor applications, such as smart metering. The gateway broadband network is suitable for data-intensive applications, such as the use of cameras for traffic monitoring. The mesh network forms a network topology. Each node is thus connected to one or more other nodes. Generally, mesh networks can repair themselves, so they have high reliability. Whenever a node fails, the network will automatically forward data through other nodes.

In terms of data transmission, IP standards will be the basis. Objects and locations have IP addresses, so they can be clearly identified. The IPv6 Internet Protocol is considered an important prerequisite for the Internet of Things and smart cities. Compared with the previous protocol IPv4, it expands the address space from 232 to 2128 unique addresses, thereby ensuring that the network city has enough address space. IPv6 low-power wireless personal area network protocol (6LoWPAN) is also particularly promising. As an energy-saving short-range radio technology, 6LoWPAN is especially suitable for sensor networks.

Shuntong’s intelligent smart street lamp system can realize remote control of the switch and dimming level of a single lamp, and the display mode can be displayed directly through a list or city geographic information (GIS).

Database data management and data sharing: Shuntong intelligent lighting monitoring system, as a subsystem of Shuntong intelligent city information management system, can seamlessly integrate with the city information management system to realize data sharing!
