Introduction to the development of smart street lighting projects in Chinese cities

Before the liberation, there were very few urban lighting projects in my country. Since the establishment of the new my country in 1949, it has been gradually developed from scratch. Especially in the past 20 years under the wave of reform and opening up, the production of urban lighting projects in my country has been launched rapidly and has achieved remarkable results. Recalling the nearly 70-year development process of my country's urban lighting project, it can be roughly divided into five stages: initial and pioneering stage, critical development stage, full deployment stage, rapid deployment stage, and continuous deployment stage.

  1, 1949~1960 The starting and pioneering stage

   At this stage, the production of urban lighting projects in my country will gather in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou and some capital cities, such as Chang'an Avenue in Beijing, Nanjing Road in Shanghai, Heping Road and Jiefang Road in Tianjin, and Zhongshan Road in Guangzhou Wait. Taking into account the technical scenery at that time, the lighting devices were relatively simple and the illuminance level was low. There are very few urban phenomenon lighting projects at this stage, except for some iconic buildings in big cities, such as Beijing’s Tiananmen Square and the top ten buildings for the 10th anniversary of the National Day, Shanghai Zhongsu Youai Building and Chongqing’s Southwest Civic Auditorium, etc. There is no phenomenon lighting in the buildings. At that time, the lighting of night scenes was almost always based on general lighting, and the lights were only turned on during severe festivals.

  2, 1961~1980 key development stage

   During this period, my country experienced economic difficulties and social turmoil. The production of urban lighting projects was the same as other projects, and was greatly impacted by the social and economic changes at that time. However, some key city road lighting and key architectural phenomenon lighting are still in continuous development. Many of these city road lighting initially use high-pressure sodium lamps, and high-pole lighting is initially promoted and used in city squares, ports and docks, such as Beijing East Chang'an Street, High-pole lighting projects in Jianguomen inner section, Chegongzhuang Street, Shanghai Yan'an Road, Nanjing Central Gate Plaza. The night view lighting improvement project of Tiananmen Square in Beijing during the 30th anniversary of the National Day was also completed at this stage.

  3, 1981~1999 full development stage

   Calculated according to the relevant data of the Institute of Building Physics of the National Academy of Building Research, in 1983 there were only 21 cities in the country where there were 10,000 street lights, and a total of 480,000 street lights. By 1999, there were 63 cities with more than 10,000 street lights, and the total number of street lights reached 1.46 million, a quadrupled. At this stage, the urban road lighting engineering technology and management level have been comprehensively improved. The first is that the types, quality and styles of lighting sources and lamps have greatly advanced and increased, and the lighting effects have been significantly improved. Many urban street lights have power cables into the ground, and concrete light poles have been replaced with steel light poles.

   The production of urban phenomenon lighting projects at this stage has also entered a period of full development, especially in 1989, Shanghai took the lead in the implementation of the transformation and production of night lighting projects in the Bund and Nanjing East Road scenic spots, followed by Beijing, Tianjin, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Dalian, Qingdao, Hangzhou and other regions also carried out the assembly production of scenic night scene lighting projects. Many of these cities focused on welcoming Hong Kong's return in 1997 and celebrating the 50th anniversary of the National Day in 1999, combined with urban reconstruction and urban appearance renovation, and planned the production of urban phenomenon lighting for some key scenic spots and severe buildings.

  4, 2000~2007 rapid development stage

   After entering the new century, the speed of urbanization in my country has been accelerating, which has brought about increasing demand for urban lighting engineering production. At the same time, with the advancement of citizens' living standards, various provinces and cities have also increased their investment in phenomenon lighting. In this process, the lamps used are mainly high-pressure sodium lamps and floodlights, which have high energy consumption and severe light pollution.

  5, from 2008 till now, it can continue to expand

   The guiding ideology of lighting engineering production at this stage is to develop scientifically, to deal with the relationship between functional lighting and phenomenon lighting, day and night scenes, lighting production and environmental protection and energy saving, so that the lighting engineering production can continue to be carried out. Since 2007, with the advancement of technology, LED luminous power has increased and costs have decreased, and LED lighting products have become the primary material of the industry. The use and promotion of LEDs have solved the problems of energy saving and environmental protection, and the light pollution has also been controlled, which has effectively promoted the continued development of lighting engineering. At the same time, people's requirements for urban night environmental quality and the level of phenomenon are further advanced, and the enthusiasm for the production of phenomenon lighting in all parts of the country is gradually heating up, showing a 'blowout' situation.
